God’s

Incommunicable

Attributes

PART ONE

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things. Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your discretion people are made great and given strength.
— 1 Chronicles 29:11-12 (NLT)
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
— Colossians 1:16 (NKJV)

God's power is according to His pleasure

Although God has an enemy, God is not embarrassed or hampered by Him. God does not contend with the enemy as though the enemy could overcome Him. God is free to follow His own pleasure, and God’s power flows according to His pleasure.

Biblically the word pleasure and will are almost interchangeable in scripture. To get a better picture of what we mean by this let's look at Revelation 4:11 in the KJV and the NKJV:

“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are, and were created.” (KJV)

The word for is the Greek word dia listed in Strong's concordance as G1223. It carries this meaning: through - by the means of.

The phrase pleasure is the Greek word thelema listed in Strong's concordance as G2307. It means (1) What one wishes of the purpose of God (2) Inclination: desire, pleasure, will.

“You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.” (NKJV)

I hope you can see that both translations are correct. The etymology of this word by Hebraism is to delight in—desire. I believe that the writer wants us to know that the will of God originates out of the “heart” of Who He Is.

“…God is Love.” (1 John 4:8) This is how the Bible invites us to know Him.

God is not presented as some kind of cosmic intelligence or an impersonal force. So often in our culture, we do things out of our will or strength of mind, and our heart is not connected at all. This is not the way of God.

In these scriptures, we see that it is not correct to think of God being moved by what we describe and understand as “fleshly emotion” for God is a Spirit (John 4:24). However, God moves, creates and works in accordance with Who He Is, and He Is Love. Our creation was out of the desire of His heart. God wanted an extended family.

“But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.” (Psalm 115:3 NKJV)

“Whatever the Lord pleases He does, In heaven and in earth, In the seas and in all deep places.” (Psalm 135:6 NKJV)

“Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure.’” (Isaiah 46:10 NKJV)

“God has now revealed to us His mysterious plan regarding Christ, a plan to fulfill His own good pleasure.” (Ephesians 1:9 NLT)

God's power is constant and all sufficient

God never experiences a lack of power. All He has done has not diminished His power.  Nothing can take away or add to this incommunicable attribute.

“Have you never heard? Have you never under-stood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of His understanding.”

Isaiah 40:28 NLT

God's Power Operates In Perfect Balance

The omnipotence of God is beautiful in its perfection.  Mighty as is His power it never over-rides or interferes with His other attributes.  His power never moves until He wills and He cannot will but according to His righteousness; nor does His righteousness offend His love and mercy.  Yet God cannot exercise His love and mercy without satisfying His justice and holiness. All work together in absolute perfection; all tempered by His pleasure.  All things from the dust under our feet to the planets and stars above are part of one common unity and all are held in perfect balance.

God’s omnipotent perfection is part of the “Beauty of the Lord.”
